A new report from the BBNet Phase II NIBB, produced by Alder BioInsights, FREY and Perspective Economics highlights the increasingly important role of biorefining in supporting the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future.
Biorefining enables the conversion of renewable biological materials such as agricultural waste and algae into fuels, chemicals, and sustainable materials, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional industrial production methods.
The report also underscores the UK’s strong foundation in research and innovation, with close collaboration between universities, research institutes, and industry driving progress in industrial biotechnology. Overall, the sector is estimated to contribute between £5 billion and £12.5 billion to the UK economy.
