Alder BioInsights News Review: Bioenergy, June 2025

Foreword
The focus is sharpening on a technology that is quickly evolving from a promising concept into a tangible reality: Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Once framed largely in terms of potential and “what could be,” CCS is now becoming a reality. Across the UK, Europe, and the USA, key infrastructure is already being developed—laying the groundwork not only to reduce fossil fuel emissions but also to enable negative emissions through biomass-based CCS (BECCS). This isn’t just about plans; it’s about shovels in the ground, wells being drilled, and significant investments secured.
The United Kingdom is staking its claim in this essential infrastructure race. The British government has recently confirmed significant funding towards industrial carbon capture clusters as part of its Spending Review. Projects like Viking in the Humber and the Acorn project in Aberdeenshire, which have had deal partnerships agreed back in 2023 and 2021 respectively, are due to receive substantial development funding as part of the agreed £9.4 billion towards CCS projects. Specifically, Acorn project, being developed by Storegga, Shell UK, Harbour Energy and North Sea Midstream Partners, will receive £200 million towards its development…
