European Bioplastics is advising EU Member States to go beyond the PPWR’s mandatory compostability rules for items like coffee pods, tea bags and fruit labels from 2028, arguing that compostability is one of the most effective routes for food-soiled packs, carrier bags, and small wrappers that disrupt recycling. The organisation highlights opportunities to extend compostable solutions to salad bowls, bakery wraps, condiment packaging and coffee cups, where conventional recycling consistently underperforms.
