Alder BioInsights News Review: Biobased Products, August 2025
Kon Drousiotis

Foreword brief
The European Council has adopted a new negotiating position on proposed End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) regulation aimed at promoting sustainable design and recycling. The new framework expands coverage to include heavy trucks and sets ambitious targets for recycled content, such as requiring 15% recycled plastics within six years and 25% within a decade. While some industry groups, like Plastics Europe, advocate for even stricter targets and the inclusion of bio-based plastics, others, such as the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) and the European Recycling Industries’ Confederation (EuRIC), are calling for harmonized End-of-Waste (EoW) criteria across Europe to boost market confidence in recycled materials. At the same time, companies like Pirelli are demonstrating that high-performance products can be made with a majority of recycled and bio-based materials, and Zeon Corporation is investing in research for plant-based rubber, highlighting the global push for a more sustainable economy in the automotive sector.
