The UK Chemical Industries Association (CIA) and the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) share a highly aligned stance on biomass-derived plastics, advocating for the term “biomass-derived plastics” to encompass bio-based and bio-attributed plastics. They agree on the necessity of introducing targets to incentivize the use of biomass-derived plastics, emphasizing that these targets should be realistic as well as being based on comprehensive impact assessments.
Both organizations also stress the importance of establishing clear and consistent sustainability criteria for biomass sourcing, applicable across all end-uses, and specifically factor in the criteria outlined in Article 29 (2-7) of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED) as foundation. Furthermore, both Cefic and the CIA call for the “pragmatic implementation of a cascading use” principle to optimize biomass utilization, prevent market distortions, and promote complementary rather than competing demands across sectors, while advocating for incentives and support for the use of biomass in the chemical industry…
